Cloth Diaper Reviews

So, we have entered the world of cloth diapering and so far love it!

Our Stash and my thoughts:

Newborn:
  • 18 fitted newborn Kissaluvs (everyone recommends 24 and I would agree with this number)
    • LOVE these diapers, we didn't really need the newborn umbilical cord snap down as his belly button wasn't near the diaper
    • I've noticed that the snap placement isn't very consistent between the diapers
    • website says that they last to 15 pounds, they didn't for us.  Owen may have been a heavy wetter and they became too wet (started to leak) at about 11+ pounds, I tried putting inserts in there but they were way too bulky.
    • he is on the last snap on one side and one snap in on the other; this has been since birth or 8 lbs, we never had to move to both last snaps because he has such a tiny waist for his size.
    • they were great for 2 months; if he had been smaller they would have lasted longer.
  • 6 thirsties xs covers
    • could have done with just 4
    • velcro or hook and loop makes for very easy adjustments and I like how you can even over lap the tabs
  • 12 small prefolds
    • tried to use one time so far and it seemed small and hard to do
    • he seemed wetter faster
  • We never traveled overnight with the kissaluvs and thirties covers because he only wore them for 2 months.  We did use these when going out of the house, since I had extra covers.  If the cover gets too poopy I tossed the whole thing in the wet bag.  If it is just a wet diaper I wipe it with the wipe and find a place to let air dry or put back on if it isn't too wet.
Pretoddler:
  • Nicki's Best Bottom Diapers: (click here for website)
    • these says birth to 35lbs, but i couldn't get a good fit on Owen at 3 weeks APX 9lbs; it was loose around his legs and in the back...boo!
    • we tried again at about 12 pounds (this the weight other mom's recommended that they would fit)still a little big
    • we had a lot of leaks at first, Owen is almost 13 pounds now and occasionally we have a leak, but not enough to frustrate us.
    • I have found the stay dry inserts leak more.  I think it is because Owen must pee a lot at one time and the insert can't absorb fast enough.  Also, they are shorted than the hemp and he has outgrown them by 4 months, by too short I mean that they don't cover high enough in the front.
    • The hemp inserts have worked great and I love that they are smaller on his bottom (trim as the Cloth Diaper world says!)
    • One draw back that I didn't consider and hadn't heard about is with a breastfed newborn the poop is very runny.  This leads to it leaking off the insert and the cover becoming dirty, sometimes I can wipe it off, but if it gets on the leg gussets then into the diaper pail it goes.
    • This draw back seems to lead to a rash occasionally on Owen's leg/bottom where the poop "puddles" in the diaper and sits on his skin.  The diaper rash seems to have stopped for the most part.  I am thinking it was still from him being young getting the diaper rash.
    • I have used the doublers occasionally, but I feel they are SO uncomfortable for Owen, he can barely move with all that padding.  I would rather him be comfortable and have an occasional leak (I am talking maybe once a week).  Though as soon as I type this he is going to start leaking more.  Update:  he did leak A LOT more!
  • BumGenius Organic One-Size All-In-One:
    • Thanks to a wonderful generous woman who gave us 8 of these diapers: yellow, white, blue and green!! They are so soft and cute!
    • These leaked horribly at first.  Owen was just too small.  He is starting to fit more in these at about 12 pounds.  Owen is about 15 lbs now and these work great, though if I go too long without changing his diaper they will leak.
    • Traveling or running errands these are my diaper of choice.  We had great success with these on Owen's first trip out of town. They are just like a disposable diaper except we wash and reused these!
    • Tip for boys: point the tip down if leaking out the back.   If it is pointed up all the pee will go up and before that small area can absorb it will follow gravity (usually Owen is on his back).
  • Charlie Bananna Cloth Diapers:  These seem to have decent review and are very similar to the popular Fuzibunz.  This is a one size pocket diaper.  I want to try this for night time if I need some extra stuffing.  They were on sale and I got two cute prints: under construction and orbit!!  So much for gender neutral.
    • First time putting it on Owen I had the leg elastic set on 6 and it was too tight, he is probably 13+ pounds, his waist is skinny and I would say his legs are not skinny, but not overly chubby so normal.
    • After some adjustments I got the leg elastics in the right setting, but still they leak some.
    • These were not the night time diaper solution I had hoped for.  I now use these for when we leave the house in the diaper bag.  I tried double stuffing and they were so huge and still leaked.
  •  Night time solution:  Back to our old favorites we used when Owen was a newborn.  Fitted diapers and a cover.  This time I bought the hemp diapers, which are supposed to be more absorbing and we got a bumis fitted cover for free with the purchase.  Also, I bought a wool cover....not sold on this yet as I nursed Owen in the middle of the night and we both felt damp.  Maybe after his is out of his swaddle sack we can use this again.
Cloth Wipes:
  • We have been using the cloth wipes since a big diaper rash flare up
  • No special solution or scents just warm water and we've been keeping them in the diaper warmer; he seems to like the warm wipes better when he has a bad rash I will do anything that makes him feel better!
  • Bottoms Up Wipes:  we loved these, they are the smallest wipe around; fit great in the wipe warmer and were the perfect thickness.  I scored them at a half off deal.  I didn't use the oils and scents that came with them.  Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a website that sells additional wipes.  So, I purchased another brand.
  • Grovia cloth wipes:  I got 3 packs after reading good reviews.  I really like these except that some of them are unraveling at the edges.  I am hoping I am not going to have to serge the edges myself. I had to serge the edges...they are very soft, but are pilling a little after a month of use.
Washing:
  • First Method: Hot wash with cold rinse (when I have time I leave the lid up to soak for a while), one large scoop of the Rockin' Green unscented Soft rock, I am drying the kissaluvs in the dryer and hang drying the covers. The cloth wipes head straight to the sink under warm water and into the wipe warmer.
  • Second Method:  Owen seems to have WAY more poop and we began to have some stink.  I have been doing a cold/cold wash no detergent (like a long rinse). Then a hot/cold wash with 2 scoops of Rockin' Green.  So far so good.
Upcoming diapers:
  • none at this time
